But the Food and Drug Administration warns consumers that costume lenses without a prescription aren’t just a bad idea — they’re illegal to sell.
Non-prescription colored contacts often contain chemicals that may cause an allergic reaction, which can result in itching and redness around the eyes. They may also scratch the cornea, which can lead to eye infections (keratitis) or corneal ulcers, potentially causing permanent blindness. They can also blur your vision, making it difficult to navigate busy streets or haunted houses safely.

Decorative or costume contact lenses are available online and at beauty supply stores, novelty shops, grocery and drug stores, and some salons and makeup artists. They’re sometimes sold under different names, such as fashion or colored contact lenses or cosmetic or theater contact lenses. And they can be found in a wide variety of colors and styles, from natural-looking green and brown to gray and blue. Some are inspired by movies, including zombies and werewolves, and others are designed to look like vampires. They can range from spooky to goofy and even deranged, but the FDA says you should never wear any that appear to change your eye color without first seeing an eye doctor for a proper fitting and instruction.
